Kubuntu 9.10 wont install from a USB drive

    Hi,
I am new to linux. After much research I decided to go with kubuntu. I downloaded kubuntu 9.10 to a USB thumbdrive I have used it successfully in other computers in live mode (I can't run live mode on my computer because I only have 256 MB of RAM) it worked like a charm so I decided that I wanted to create a dual boot system on my computer which is running windows xp. When I boot from the USB drive I select install. It then starts to install and goes into the start up menu with the Kubuntu logo and then tells what it is doing. After a while it just goes to a blank black screen. I have a celeron D (346) processor, 256 MB of RAM and 50 GB of Hard drive space. I researched this topic and haven't been able to find anything about it. If it has already been posted please point me in the direction. Thank you

The RAM is sufficient for a LiveCD install. What video card do you have in your rig?

I don't have a video card. I am just using onboard video.

        Laptop?

When you say it goes to a black screen, are you sure it isn't just going into screen saver (blank screen) mode? Or when you get the blank screen, is the system completely unresponsive? What do you do when you get the blank screen?

          I am using a desktop.

I am sure it isn't going into screen saver mode because I wiggle the mouse and the system is completely unresponsive. The only thing I can do to shut it off is to hold the power button until it powers down.

You need to enter a "boot option" -- I think it is F6 on the Live CD first menu. It may be "noacpi" or something to do with the power management or video. Check out #2 on the FAQs in my signature.

Okay. As to "The only thing I can do to shut it off is to hold the power button until it powers down." Instead of that, press and hold together, Alt+SysReq (the PrtSc button), and then in this order, press the r, s, e, i, u, and b buttons. This is called the 'Magic SysReq keys" and usually allows for a controlled shutdown and reboot of an unresponsive system.

As to your video. When you boot from the USB, instead of opting to install, can you run it - try out without installing? Or do you get the same results?

To Snowhog I have tried both persistent mode and live mode and the same thing happens. I just figured it was because I didn't have enough ram (I believe you need 384 MB to run live or persitent mode)

And as to the post by dibl, There is no "F" options in my kubuntu 9.10 there is only persistent, live, advanced, memory test, file integrity test, and help. There is nothing in the advanced file. I did however find that by going to help you can enter the manual boot option you want. I tried noacpi and nothing happened. According to the #2 FAQ it gives three examples of what to add to the boot option for video problems. I tried them all and none of them worked. However this time it came up saying something about mounting and input/output errors.

I stand corrected. I believe that is right, and with less than that, you can't run the LiveCD. However, you could download the Alternate CD .iso, which is a command line install. But, even when installed, running Kubuntu with 256MB of RAM is going to be a bit painful I think.

Ok. Thanks. I guess I'll download that and try it out. If it is too slow for me to stand I'll have to upgrade my memory. I just don't have a lot of money to upgrade memory right now. Anyways thanks for your help I really appreciate you helping me get this problem figured out.

                    Have a nice day.

No problem. RAM prices for desktop rigs are pretty reasonable. Amazon.com is selling a 512MB stick for $17.11.
