Installed on One Laptop, using on another -- problems

I had two laptops that had issues. I therefore bought a new hd and decided to put Kubuntu on it and use it for the best laptop of the two. The problem was that my cd-drive doesn't work on that laptop so I installed the hd in the other laptop, installed kubuntu 9.10 - everything worked. I then removed the hd and installed it in the other laptop.

I have wireless built in -- in the better laptop -- nothing is found

I guess the main question I have is how can I have kubuntu search for hardware and to setup the appropriate drivers? I went to hardware drivers and it comes up blank.

    Any advice?

    Welcome

No prior linux knowledge assumed (given this is your 1st post) so apologies if I'm too basic.

First thing to do is find out what kind of wireless card you have.

In a terminal (hit alt+F2 andtype konsole to tun this) type

    Code:
    lspci -vv
and copy and paste the output in your reply.

OK, thanks. Yeah I have been reading a lot online to try to figure this thing out. It looks like I have a card (broadcomm) that tends to be a problem child. I have the BCM4318. It shows that my wlan0 is disabled.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks

          you may try this:
          2.3 Drivers
Drivers for most of the laptops can be easily installed
          GoTo: K->Applications->System->Hardware Drivers
install drivers which suits your hardware (preferable one is that which is recommended by kubuntu)

read the first post for in "Help the new guy" thread.. it is indeed helpful.

if you are transiting from windoze you might find this helpful:

Re: Installed on One Laptop, using on another -- problems

one option is to put the drive back into the 'good' laptop, and install the package 'b43-fwcutter' to pull in the needed firmware files for your 'bad' lap[top's wireless card. (this assumes you unable to connect the non-working laptop to the 'net via an ethernet cable and install the package from there)
