Failures at install, then filesystem is Read Only?

I am having many problems with a Compaq Presario SR2170NX. Installed first in dual boot with the original VISTA installation, but they wouldn't play well together. Then installed KUBUNTU 9.10.04 as the only OS. That is much better, but the filesystem is READ ONLY and I can't find where it is set that way - very limiting. Also, when I run fsck manually, there are many errors reported. After fixing them, KUBUNTU won't run at all on reboot. Also has trouble if I install all the 182 updates. Along the way, (more than 5 installs), many times the newly installed OS initially fails to start without an extra reboot or two. Works great compared with VISTA, once it gets going, but is limited by the RO filesystem. However, it will install Firefox, nothing else I've tried. Any thoughts?

You aren't going to get more help by posting the same issue more than once. You're more likely to alienate others instead. Please read this: http://www.kubuntuforums.net/forums/...p?topic=4216.0.

As far as your issue - you're not giving us much real data. I'd like to know how your file system can be mounted Read Only but then you could install Firefox. Sounds like shenanigans to me.
