      Try
      Code:
      lspci -vv
If you don't see a VGA card/chip on the list, then that's a bad thing, but I think you will.

To see your loaded kernel modules (drivers) do
      Code:
      lsmod

Re: screen goes black with no signal after update?

        it says:
latency :0, cache line size: 32 bytes
interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 16
        (then lists the regions 1-5)

        firewire (ieee 1394): agrere systems fw322/323 (rev 70) (prog-if 10)
susystem: asustek computer inc. device 8294
        control: I/0 mem+ busmaster+ speccycle- memwinv+ VGAsnoop- parerr- step
        ping - serr- fastb2b- disintx-
        status: cap+ 66mhz udf- fasrb2b+ parerr- devsel=medium >tabort- <tabort-
        <maabort- > serr- <perr- intx-
latency: 64 (3000ns min, 6000ns max), cache line size: 32 bytes

and then some more about the interrupt...i am guessing the VGAsnoop is what i am looking for?

The section we're looking for from lcpci -vv is

          01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Blahblahblah...

i cannot see it, but i wonder if its further up on the list as lots of text "fly by" when i hit the command lspci -vv and the first i now see is clock pm- etc.. so i guess it could be further up.. but how do i scroll?

To control the scrolling, with the spacebar on your keyboard, use

              Code:
              lspci -vv | more

Re: screen goes black with no signal after update?

It's been awhile since I had to install an ati driver but, IIRC, the installation procedure also produces an "uninstall.sh" file in the directory where the ati files that the installer creates were stored.

                    on "lsmod"

i see fglrx and next it says 2278776 and then 0

other then that i cannot identify any thing which seem like a ati driver to me?

I think this the thread you need:

ok, i think ive managed to purge ati and fglrx....it took a while, but i think they are gone... i will try to reboot now and see if that works...and then try the rest of the steps found on that link... so far so good.. thank you

ps: it says some of these things will be default in lucid, should i instead do a upgrade? as i am unsure about step 2 and 3...

now i boot straight into tyty1 so atleast i dont need to use the supergrub cd...will try step 2 and 3..

The link to that "old" driver http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...6&lang=English, which you gave in Reply #13, is the link to the current version of the ATI Catalyst Proprietary Driver. Isn't that the same one you just removed?

sorry i was responding to the post in which i was given a link to a another forum where the topic was discussed....and in that forum they gave several links which was to several sites that had drivers etc.. but i dont get how you are suppose to downlod these drivers in tty1 mode? right now i think i will try to download another driver and then get into my system and then get all these things done as in tty1 mode i am a bit helpless...
