screen goes black with no signal after update?

    Hi,

i just rebooted after getting 8 new updates today, and now i cannot get into my system again...when i boot up everything is normal until i get to the login screen which is when the screen goes black and says no signal found....

i also had a few boots where i got into grub and tried to load recovery etc, but all i got was text login and after a short while that too went black...

but now i cannot get into the system at all....grub dosnt show me the different login choices....i just go straight to black...

I had a similar "accident" after I was experimenting with installing the latest Lucid Daily LiveCD onto a USB stick. I downloaded the Super GRUB2 Disk 1.30 iso and burned it. After I booted it I chose the second ">2" option and got into my desktop. Then I reinstalled GRUB2 and its associated files: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...2348#msg222348

I got that error when I tried the old grub options (which looked for the menu.lst file). Choose the options which have ">2" in them.

And? Were you able to boot to your desktop normally?

When you ALT-F1 back to text mode what error messages are displayed?

have you looked at /var/log/Xorg.0.log yet?

Re: screen goes black with no signal after update?

It looks like the update replaced your working ATI video driver with one that doesn't work.

First, where did the previously working video driver come from?

If it is from the repository then perhaps you can download the PREVIOUS working release and install it. In my Lucid repository the current ati driver is: 1:6.12.191-1ubuntu2 If yours has the same numbering then look for one with a previous version number.

IF it was a driver you downloaded from the ati website then you can mark the driver as executable and then run it as root:
sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer.....(fill this in with the rest)
                          Just say Ok to everything.
After the installer is finished, in the terminal
                          sudo aticonfig --initial -f

                          Then reboot.

If you get a working ati driver running the open synaptic, locate the driver, and lock it. (Package --> lock version)

i will try this tomorrow as now i must sleep, but the driver i had and which worked was downloaded from: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...6&lang=English

and i think its the same version that they still have on their page...

but how can i tell what version i already have installed in tty1 mode?

also ive tried to look at my xorg via sudo nano, but when i get into nano its empty...

well thank you guys anyways.. hope i get it working tomorrow.. by the way, can i upgrade to lucid from my current platform via tty1? would that perhaps help my situation?

If it was you last working ATI driver then I'd take the bird in the hand and go with it.

xorg.conf IS empty because it is no longer used. The software which detects hardware at bootup (used to be HAL but I'm not sure what it is right now) automatically detects your hardware and configures the exiting driver to run it. If you remove the bad driver (sudo apt-get remove whateveritsnameis) and install the good one you downloaded from that site then you should be good to go.
