A couple of things I wanted to comment on, but I realized that Mandriva is running the show. Correct? I'm not sure if its grub legacy or grub2.
One thing you can do, if your USB drive now has Kubuntu installed, is add it to Mandriva's grub menu.
BTW- I tried installing Ubuntu to a USB HD that I have, and I noticed that ubiquity didn't automatically select my sdbc when I went advance. It show it and I clicked on it ,but I had to manually enter it in the advance screen.
What I would like to see is the output of boot_info_script(see by blue link) with your USB drive plugged in. You run it using 'sudo' and it will dump a file named RESULTS.txt. Everything we need is in the file.
