    Re: Install to USB HDD...

A couple of things I wanted to comment on, but I realized that Mandriva is running the show. Correct? I'm not sure if its grub legacy or grub2.

One thing you can do, if your USB drive now has Kubuntu installed, is add it to Mandriva's grub menu.

BTW- I tried installing Ubuntu to a USB HD that I have, and I noticed that ubiquity didn't automatically select my sdbc when I went advance. It show it and I clicked on it ,but I had to manually enter it in the advance screen.

What I would like to see is the output of boot_info_script(see by blue link) with your USB drive plugged in. You run it using 'sudo' and it will dump a file named RESULTS.txt. Everything we need is in the file.

      sdb1 is flagged as boot.

I installed Ubuntu, same process, and it boots fine. The GRUB is slow to load(like 15 - 20 seconds) but after the GRUB it boots quickly. I did the exact same install. I personally am not a Gnome fan...

          Re: Install to USB HDD...

The slow boot is to be expected, I suppose. There is a bug in GRUB 2 (now fixed I think for 10.04) that causes GRUB 2 to be slow on multi-disk multi-boot. Not sure how that might be in play here. However, in general, when messing with "boot from USB," I've noticed you may expect slower than normal boot-up times; not a problem, just inconvenient.

Disconcerting that it works for Ubuntu and not Kubuntu.

Did you try to boot Kubuntu by (manually) chainloading (as in my post) just to see if you CAN boot it by hook or by crook?
