    No worries - that's why we're here

Sorry - I assumed you were using karmic and had installed it from the CD. If you upgraded from 9.04 then you've got GRUB_Legacy rather than GRUB2.

To edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, first make it write-able

    sudo o+w /boot/grub/menu.lst

    Then edit it.

      It says

      sudo: o+w: command not found.

The Karmic that I put on there right now (that doesn't work) I got by upgrading from Jaunty via the Upgrade Manager. However, I previously installed it from the LiveCD and it acts the same way both times. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Anyway now my problem is that it says that /boot/grub/menu.lst doesn't exist. Is that because I'm running off the LiveCD, and I need to specify somehow that it needs to look on the hard drive instead of on the CD?

Ok, I have decided to sort of give up. I'm going to put Hardy back on (I have the live cd for that) and then upgrade to Jaunty via the update manager and just use that until Lucid is officially out and I can order the free live cd from ship it. This will eliminate any variables that may be happening with my cd burner or the download process or whatever.

Thanks for all your help, oshunluvr, but everything was turning into a dead end (probably mostly due to my lack of knowledge).

I love Kubuntu, at least I loved Hardy, so hopefully I will like Jaunty and Lucid as much.

            Thanks!

You will love jaunty, karmic, and lucid all the same. In the future, try giving us some more detail about your issues. I'm still confused to this day whether or not you ever installed off of the live CD.

Anyway, with the addition of KDE4.x, Jaunty, Karmic, and Lucid are going to look a lot different from Hardy so read the documentation and learn how it works. Then you'll fall in love with it.

Re: New install of Karmic, opening screen doesn't fully load, blinks on and off

I'm sorry if I wasn't very clear, I thought I had stated in the very first post that I installed Karmic off the LiveCD and it didn't work. I then installed it by putting Hardy back on from the LiveCD and then upgrading from the upgrade manager to Intrepid, then to Jaunty, then to Karmic. I got the exact same results doing that, so tried it from the LiveCD again. No luck. So I decided to go with Jaunty.

However, the second time I restarted Jaunty, it started hanging on the boot screen. It just sat there and wouldn't go any farther. So I decided that I don't have time for all this monkey business, I just need something that works, and Hardy has been working wonderfully for me for over a year now. So I'm back with the tried and true, faithful Hardy Heron. The only reason I wanted to upgrade is that my webcam is supposed to work out of the box on Karmic, and in Hardy it doesn't. I did find some instructions on how to get it going, but they are not specific to Hardy, just Linux in general. I'll make another post about that and see if anyone knows what the problem is.

Thanks for all the help. Maybe after Lucid officially comes out I'll get brave enough to give it a try.
