[Solved] Did Kubuntu-Desktop Overwrite My Ubuntu Installation?

I had login probs after adding Kubuntu-Desktop to my Ubuntu install. I am now on a live cd. I have mounted my drive and the Home folder is EMPTY! I've been transitioning so I had a few things on the desktop that were not backed up. I really hope they're not gone. At this point I'd be so happy just to get my Ubuntu install back...

I really don't understand because I did this same process with installing Gnome in Mythbuntu (Xfce) and it worked fine. I could just choose which session I wanted. What can I do to find my old desktop/ubuntu install?

It looks like my installation was moved to another partition. Is that possible? if so, what do I do to get things back the way they were?

When you boot off a live CD, you have not mounted the drive that is full. The live CD is using its own /

Re: Did Kubuntu-Desktop Overwrite My Ubuntu Installation?

I mounted the drive. I have a 40gb boot partition that used to hold my Ubuntu install, and a 200gb partition that used to be data only. The 40gb partition appears to have Kubuntu on it now, and my Ubuntu files are all on the 200gb partition.

I think I must have set the 2nd partition to mount as /Home & forgot. So the problem (I think) is that Kubuntu does not see this user. I guess I could try adding a user from the live cd.

OK I think we nead to start from scratch with the exolanation of what hapend and how.

1- you had a working ubuntu install.....right? and what ver?

2-then frome in ubuntu you did a "apt-get install Kubuntu-Desktop"......right?

3- then on a reboot you started having problems trying to log into KDE ....right?

did you ever try to log back in to Gnome?

Yes to all questions. Version is 9.10. Choosing Gnome is the same. Somehow the user account is gone, or password is gone or something.

OK now I feel like even more of an idiot than usual when messing with Linux. I didn't have the case right on one of the letters in the username! I thought I tried all the possibilities earlier but apparently not.

                  It works fine.
