    9.10 update failed

I had 8.04 installed and was enjoying the learning experience. This morning, I got an update notice and allowed the system to update to 9.10. Apparently something failed along the way as upon restart, I was presented with a terminal window after the normal Kubuntu splash screen. I logged in and no GUI. I restarted into recovery mode and got a small menu with the first item reading: Could not access PID file for nmbd. Being new to Kubuntu, I have no idea what this means or how to fix it. Can anyone help?

Accepted wisdom is that you should only update from one issue to the next - 8.04 to 8.10, 8.10 to 9.04, 9.04 to 9.10. Although I have come across oneONE person who succesfully jumped several issues.

If you can you should use a LiveCD to copy off anything that is worth saving, and then make a clean install of 9.10.

A clean install is often better than an update.

Psychocats advocates making a permanent Home, which is not formatted when there is an install, so that it can be kept permanently. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome

      Re: 9.10 update failed

Thank you. I wish I had know that before I allowed the update to start. I guess I will do a clean install. I have Ubuntu working on another partition so I will use it to backup my home folder.
