[SOLVED] 64 bit Kubuntu install crashes almost every time

but because I am so patient, I am still trying to get it going on my Asus laptop. The 32 bit version installs pretty well, and Windows XP installs perfectly every single time!

I have to hold the laptop level in my hand to reduce vibration and prevent overheating. I have to wait for the DVD to stop spinning before each entry so that it won't spin out of control (at which point I have to start all over). After a few failures I have to start all over by reinstalling XP.

The worst part is I know eventually it will work.

Why is the 64 bit install so precarious?

I don't ever recall having that much trouble with it. The main suspect, of course, is the DVD.

Can you burn an "Alternate" CD? That's what I've always used. Check the md5sum on the downloaded ISO, then burn it at 4X, or 8X if you can't go down to 4X. Set it to burn "DAO" mode if you have it.

Hmm. thanks for the interesting advice.

I am thinking too that it might be better to leave the laptop on the coffee table. I think I have finally installed the 64 bit Kubuntu.

Now I want to install the 32 bit Kubuntu for backup.

Maybe holding it on my lap is counterproductive.

I am using 64 bit on my desktop and loving it. It actually works better than 32 bit (better perfomance). Anyways, next time, a better way to install, usually with no troubles at all is to just use a usb drive

Maybe that'll work for me next time. A few month's back I tried that but the USB stick wouldn't format. I'm sure there have been improvements in the mean time.

Do use the application that ships with KDE 4.3 to image the stick?

I am not exactly sure what you mean, but you can install

            usb-creator-kde

And create a usb bootable pendrive with optional data persistence (you can save data). Or, in general, unetbootin works both in windows and linux, and it works with about any live CD (it turns it into a bootable USB drive):
            http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

            Cheers!

I used unetbootin and installed with my USB stick. Thank you! It worked like a dream!
