Ubuntu to Kubuntu, Panel blurry

I have been running Ubuntu Karmic on my old IBM T42 since it was released. Today I decided to experiment with KDE. So I search kubuntu-desktop in Synaptic package manager and installed all dependency files (about 500MB disk space needed). Everything was fine. But after I reboot and log in to KDE session, the panel won't show up clearly. Desktop background has no problem to display. Just the panel, I can only tell there is something there, but all buttons, like power management or network etc., could not be displayed. Main menu also can not be displayed. Weired...Is there something wrong with my video card?

Anyone had similar experience? I tried searching relevant issues, but nothing helpful came up. Please help me out. Thanks!

Is this problem too unique, or I have not described it clearly...Any comments would be appreciated. The problem just got me, couldn't sleep well if it is not resolved..

Can you disable or enable compositing in system settings. You can also trie to restart plasma with this command: kstart plasma

It could be related to your videocard.
Main system: Dell Studio XPS 8100 with Kubuntu 10.04
Main system: Dell Inspiron 1720 with Ubuntu 10.04
Second system: Acer Aspire 1500 with Ubuntu 10.04
Third system: Dell Dimension Desktop with Kubuntu 10.04 and Windows Vista
Fourth system: Dell Inspiron with Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows Vista

        Thanks, cantodea

I could not see K button and the menu, but managed to add a plasma widget toggle compositing. Switch on and off it would not make a difference.

Also tried Kstart Plasma in a Konsole widget, would not work either.

Any suggestions based on these failed trials?

If you can open a Konsole window, or else if Alt-F2 works, enter
          Code:
          plasma-desktop
and see if it resets the panel where you can see it.

            Thanks, dibl

Did not get the chance to try plasma-desktop command since I've sort of fixed the problem.

I don't know exactly how I fixed the problem; just went to system_menu/preferences/system_settings, which is the kubuntu system setting panel, manipulated some options under "Appearance", like windows decoration, widget style, etc., and it did the trick.

So probably there is something in the default oxygen theme that my video card could not handle properly...Anyway, just want to document this for future reference.

            Thanks again, cantodea and dibl!
