want to reinstall with /home intact (solved)

    hi,
i am just fed up with the wireless woes..
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3109692.0
    and
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...seen#msg217198

i would be happily reinstall kubuntu..
i have made /home different from / last time while installing.
but i have no clue how to tell kubuntu to use /home drive as /home by default while installing.

all the step by step installation talk about fresh install.. or with dual boot windows..
how do i re-install kubuntu with /home already present..

When you install, choose "manual" partitioning. When you get to the screen that shows the partitions available, choose the one you want for "/" and also the one you want for "/home" and on the second screen you set it NOT to format the "/home" partition. But you do want to format the one for "/".

Note that your "settings" will be preserved in the new installation, unless you delete the ~/.kde folder and most of the other ones that begin with a dot.

What about using the same user name (that you used before), is that part of this?

Yes it is. I just did all that and as far as my personal information, everything is still the same just remember to use manual partioning and reformat all partions except for /home so that you keep your files. Have fun.

Re: want to reinstall with /home intact

              1) can someone tell me what is the difference between
              sudo apt-get upgrade
              and
              sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
              which one is better?

They're two different things. See "Apt-Get" - https://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/ubuntu/...C/apt-get.html About sudo apt-get upgrade it says: " Upgrade Packages: Over time, updated versions of packages currently installed on your computer may become available from the package repositories (for example security updated). To upgrade your system, first update your package index as outlined above, and then type:
              sudo apt-get upgrade
If a package needs to install or remove new dependencies when being upgraded, it will not be upgraded by the upgrade command. For such an upgrade, it is necessary to use the dist-upgrade command. "

              Sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
is a distro upgrade e.g. when you are upgrading frpm 8.10 to 9.04 or 9.04 to 9.10

              2) also difference between...which one is better?
              sudo apt-get
              and
              sudo aptitude
Again they're two different things. If you use the first you're installing from the command line. If you use the second you are using a "front end" program called Aptitude. See "Aptitude" - https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverg.../aptitude.html

Re: want to reinstall with /home intact

Doesn't "apt-get dist-ugprade" simply upgrade to the latest package versions available from the software sources in sources.list/sources.list.d? That's normally the current distro version. "apt-get dist-upgrade" just does more things automatically than "apt-get upgrade" (see above: "If a package needs to install or remove new dependencies when being upgraded, it will not be upgraded by the upgrade command. For such an upgrade, it is necessary to use the dist-upgrade command.")

Additionally, aptitude can be invoked in UI-less commands much like apt-get, e.g. "sudo aptitude install package1 package2 package3", and that's how you often find aptitude used in forum posts. But it tries to offer smarter conflict resolution than apt-get and automatically uninstalls packages that weren't manually installed and are no longer required, among other things I'm sure.

Re: want to reinstall with /home intact (solved)

                      man apt-get

                      upgrade
upgrade is used to install the newest versions of all packages
currently installed on the system from the sources enumerated in
                      /etc/apt/sources.list
. Packages currently installed with new
versions available are retrieved and upgraded; under no
circumstances are currently installed packages removed, or packages
not already installed retrieved and installed
                      . New versions of
currently installed packages that cannot be upgraded without
changing the install status of another package will be left at
their current version. An update must be performed first so that
apt-get knows that new versions of packages are available.
                      dist-upgrade
dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade,
also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions
                      of packages
; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and
it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the
expense of less important ones if necessary. So, dist-upgrade
command may remove some packages. The /etc/apt/sources.list file
contains a list of locations from which to retrieve desired package
files. See also apt_preferences(5) for a mechanism for overriding
the general settings for individual packages.
I never use apt-get upgrade. I always use apt-get dist-upgrade and I've never had any problems with my system.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
