Black Screen after load in 9.10 - Solution?

I successfully upgraded recently from 8.10 to 9.04 to now, 9.10. My Gnome side of the system is working absolutely perfect and even the compiz effects work. So there is no problem here.

I wanted to try the 4.3 KDE, so I did the sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop. This completed successfully with no incident. I then did a package manager update to catch up on everything, and rebooted.

What is happening with KDE is that the initial "icon" screen comes up fine and goes through the various checks then the screen fades to black.

I then get a notification that the akanadi server is starting. That fades, and I get a dialog that informs me of migrations of resources, with messages that these completed.

At this point, there is total blackness with just a cursor. I can't seem to get to a TTY session using the keyboard (ctril-F2 or others). So its basically a black screen with no response.

I have seen a few things online about this, but not exactly.

I am running C2D intel system with the Intel 89245G/GZ Graphics Card. Everything works perfectly in Gnome.

    Can anyone please help?

    Thanks.

    Hi, welcome to KDE, LOL

I suspect it's something about your kde settings migration. Can you pls open a new test account and see if KDE opens up ok? If so, try removing all plasma* files in your user account, in /home/user/.kde/share/config ... that may fix it!

That's exactly what I did...I deleted the .kde directory and restarted and it worked fine.

      Thanks!

Yes, that's a little more invasive though, you lose all your settings, not just plasma's. Could you please mark the thread as [SOLVED]? Thanks!

Good advice and GTK. I did as the OP way back when. Now I know a less evil approach
          Boot Info Script

Yes, Plasma has been really unstable and still is. It is unacceptable for the Desktop to just give you a blank screen too little too often. This is one of the most common inquiries in the forum. And just resetting plasma in most cases does it. I may even write a mini howto to save time when helping people.

I think there was a lot of emphasis in innovation in KDE lately (since the KDE4 series), but stability was left behind. Oh well!
