This may be completely out of left field, but I had the exact same symptoms in the beginning. I solved it by re-installing the kernel packages.

Can anyone offer anymore help on this one? As in how to reinstall kernel packages or another suggestion...

To install the latest kernel, search kpackagekit for "linux". Sort the result and select "linux-image-generic-2.6.31.18.31 (i386). Accept the additional dependencies as presented (headers). Install, reboot, violet! latest kernel in the repository.

You can, but you'll be told that kpackagekit is already the newest and already installed.

NOW if you were to have

sudo apt-get install kpackagekit

then you would have ben told what Snowhog has sead

vinny@desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install kpackagekit

kpackagekit is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
exchange ecomorph-core libscrollkeeper0
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

I did the search as you said and instead of finding linux-image-generic-2.6.31.18.31 (i386) I found linux-image-generic-2.6.31.17.30 (i386).
