    Weird Boot Issue

    This going to be pretty vague but here goes. I'm using Karmic, I installed it the day it was released, lately it's been having problems booting. Sometimes when I start up I'll get errors popping up every 5 or 10 seconds for about a minute then it will go to the log in screen and everything works fine. More recently I've just been getting a black screen with a cursor. If I leave it alone it goes to the login screen after 3-5 minutes and, once again, everything is fine after that.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    What version of KDE are you running? What is your Use% for your / partition?

      It's kde 4.3.2.

      I'm not sure how to check the use percentage. I've been using Kubuntu for a about a year but I'm not proficient, I just kind of get by with it. I'm currently have 18% of the hard drive used if that's what you mean.

        I gave you the command, but didn't state that you have to open a console and type what I showed you.

          I actually tried that just in case but it didn't work. I opened terminal and typed the command and it said:

          df: no file systems processed

          Am I supposed to type sudo or something else before it?

            You type exactly what I showed you: df -htext3

            Type the whole thing.

              Typed it again as shown:

              df -htext3

              and I git the same message:

              df: no file systems processed

                Then something is seriously wrong. df is part of the package coreutils, and coreutils has to be installed.

                  yes seriously wrong ........df -htext3 may have given that if thar's no ext3 filesystem but df by it's self should have given somthing and df -h in humen readable form.

                  this isent a wubi install is it?................but it would probabley work thare as well?

                    I didn't think about that. Yes, that would explain the message. If the OP has Karmic installed using a filesystem other than ext3 (reiserfs, ext4, ext2, ...) that would explain the lack of output. But vinnywright is correct - df by itself will produce output.

                      I just quickly googled wubi and no, I downloaded the regular installer and did a clean install. This only started happening recently and I've been using this os since it's release. I'm using it right now and I get regular updates. Aside from the boot issue everything seems to be fine.

                      I just tried df and df -h and got multiple lines of sizes and percentages. Then I tried df -htext4 and got the following text:

                      filesystem size used avail use% Mounted on
                      /dev/sda1 180G 23G 148G 13% /

                      I don't remember doing anything unusual during the install. I certainly didn't install a different file system intentionally.

                      Okay, I didn't screw up... I just found this:

                      ext4 by default

                      The new "ext4" filesystem is used by default for new installations of Karmic; of course, other filesystems are still available via the manual partitioner. Existing filesystems will not be upgraded.

                        Good. I should have known, based on your statement that you installed (not upgraded to) Karmic, that ext4 was the filesystem installed. Explains why my command didn't result in anything. That said, we can eliminate a space problem as the cause here. You have plenty of space left on your installation.

                          I initially did upgrade but something happened during the upgrade and I couldn't figure it out so I flattened the drive and started over so there's nothing left over that could be causing problems.

                            How long ago did you do the reinstall? Has this 'behavior' been present from the outset, or did is 'show up' later?

                              That was months ago, when karmic was first released. It's only been doing this for a couple of weeks.
