Linux kernel 2.6.31-18 hangs with a black screen

Got an update notice for the 2.6.31-18 kernel. Installed it. Rebooted.

The Kubuntu scroll bar appears for 20-30 seconds and when the login screen should appear I get a black screen. The X server died during startup. The only thing I can do is reboot using the Magic Keys.

Anyone else get the new kernel working?

Hi GG! I just refreshed my sources and still don't see 31-18, I am running 31-17. Have you enabled the proposed updates repo?

Thanks for the heads up! I hope you kept an older kernel to boot up from !

Yup! However, the 2.6.31-18 kernel came from us.archive.ubuntu.com/main, not universe, multiverse or restricted.

        Yup, again!

GG: they put stuff in proposed precisely to catch regressions, it would be great if you can communicate this to the kernel team ... I am not sure what the best way is though ...

As another data point, 2.6.31-18-generic running just fine here

GG, if you boot the new kernel in Recovery Mode, and then at the root prompt run
              Code:
              service kdm start
you should get a nice error output.

You read my mind, Dibl !! 8)

I did start the 31018 kernel in the recovery mode and then chose the "resume normal boot" option. When I logged in I used "sudo kdm start" and got my desktop.

Now I am going to do a reboot and retry it from the grub menu.... be right back ...

I'm baaaaaackkkk! Guess what? When I rebooted I got the desktop without a problem and I am using the 31-18 kernel as I type. The /var/log/syslog file doesn't show any problems and all things appear to be working normally.

Just another example of Linux healing itself! 8)
