Agree with dibl, if it were a "normal" error it would be consistent, but this 1 in 5 works is odd. Here the steps I would take:

1) do a manual disk check on every partition using a live CD/USB stick

If that doesn't yield a result:

2) rebuild initramfs

3) hope for the best

Note: item 3) is - as always in life - of the utmost importance

Well I can certainly think of reasons why this may only happen some of the time - if there is only sometimes an error to check and the errors arent being checked, if it is a timing issue (look at how long reiser takes to mount, I had know idea!), or if it is as a result of a parallelisation in an effort to speed up boot that has an unfortunate side effect when the filesystem is very slow at mounting. Who knows...

I'm certainly not discounting the possibility of a hardware issue, but I dont think there is anythinglike conclusive evidence so far, you doom mongerers

Also a hard x crash is in my experience something that happens sometimes, especially on new releases (or sometimes very old releases with lots of X updates). Not too concerned there necessarily, but its damned annoying!

Had no cause to boot a live CD really, always install from the alternative CDs, much prefer a curses installer (call me old fashioned) - just had way more success with them to date.

Am going to get some diagnostics together though, and then consider a reinstall with ext4 as the filesystem (last resort though).

Also, life is a little short to spend too much time in these things, if you can get another distro that runs better, I say go ahead and use it But please stick around in the forum

All in all, I think we, Linux enthusiasts, sometimes focus too much on speed when choosing a FS. To me, predictability and data integrity comes first. Speed next. Ext4 fits the sweet spot for me in that respect

I tried Deb 5 already, but it got no where with the Broadcom wifi (dont ask, it will cause me more horrible pain )

Whatever I go with , if I cant get this stable now I'll look into the next LTS version, life is too short to be upgrading every 6 months for a start!

TBH I've used kubuntu for a long time and looked for answers on here for ages for all sorts of issues, but never needed to ask a question (and push for help) this much before, the answers to my questions have almost invaiably been asked already . I'll be sticking around, dont worry!

I got used to using reiser, and it was a big step up from ext2, and ext3 never got close to the performance on my system when I bothered to check. Never ever had an issue with it before. Although its not strictly deprecated, work has clearly stopped, and that means its not keeping up with other changes properly, so I think its definitely time to move on. Ext4 next I think, unless you guys would recommend anything else over it (JFS?), way back I used to use XFS a lot but that was frowned upon for a while too, dont know if that is still the case.

All partitions on hard disk have checked out fine

I would reformat one of these partitions to /ext4 and have a very simple installation of kubuntu on ext4 with /home in the same partition, something VERY simple. And see how things go. then perhaps start migrating everything to ext4, etc ... but mostly test drive kubuntu and ext4 for a while in a simple setting ...

This has just happened to me I'm afraid. I cannot boot any more. I get the error message about waiting to mount /home: waiting for UUID .... Press ESC for recovery shell.

I haven't seen anything in that option that seems to help.

Worse - I have tried a live CD and whilst the home folder is shown when I try to open it the suggestion is that it has been deleted. However, it shows the correct free space. So it looks like the filesystem is trashed. I did experience some problems with Wicd earlier in the day but nothing to suggest evrything was going pear-shaped.

Any thoughts? Think a data rescue is needed. BTW unlike the OP I'm using Ext4

Actually, correct my earlier comment: The free space is not correctly detected - from the live cd it is showing the free space on the root partio - it does not appear to be detecting the /home partition at all (ubuntu 9.10 live cd and UNR live boot).

The only thing that seems to detect the /home partition is an opensuse live cd (it detects a 37GB ext4 partition) but it's not live in the true sense (demo would be a better term) as it does not allow you to access the hard drive at all.

So, am I stumped? Before moving on I could do with some thoughts on a couple of things:


Have I lost my data? if so, it's probably not too critical although Iuploaded all my Chrimas pics during he week and haven't backed up yet so that's a pain. Any idea whether I will be able to recover them from the SD card if necessary.

My lappy is 4 years old- is this a sign of HDD failure?
