kdesudo filemanager on kde 4.4 beta 2/RC1/RC2/Final

    Hi,

I just upgraded to KDE 4.4 Beta 2 (Yes, I know...). Everything's working great except for the following issue.

When I try to open a folder in Dolphin (or Konqueror or Krusader) using kdesudo I just get a message that "The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" and the relevant folder shows no contents. It doesn't make any difference if I use kubicle's root action service menu or run kdesudo dbus-launch dolphin (et al) from a terminal. Curiously this issue doesn't occur if I try to open trash:/ or applications:/ etc., only simple folders and on any partition.

This is a dist-upgrade from kde 4.3.4 on Karmic with a fresh ~/.kde.

I just wondered if this was a known issue, or whether anyone else has seen this? Or is it a bug affecting a minority of one

    Regards,

    Steve

Getting the same problem after my upgrade from 4.3.4 to 4.4 Beta2. Also getting the same message when I try to run kdesu (or kdesudo) kwrite. This type of error/problem has a long (years!) and varied history on the Internet, but I have found no solution. Seems like it may have something to do with mime info.

Will let you know if I find a solution. Please do the same. The RC is due out tomorrow, so maybe in a week or so a new update will solve the problem.

Re: kdesudo filemanager on kde 4.4 beta 2

Haven't been able to solve the problem, but I have found a way to start the programs. I also have GNOME (among other environments) installed, and I can get root access by using, for example:

gksudo dbus-launch dolphin (or kate, kwrite, konqueror, etc.)

gksu doesn't work, and it's possible that "gk" and "kde" commands are in conflict with each other... Who knows? (I'm no expert )

I hope this can help you in some way, and I'll keep trying to find the "real" problem and solution.

I have also been playing around with gksudo, but the results have been slightly erratic. Sometimes it works but at others I get the same problem. I think it's mostly more successful if the time-out period from any other gk/kdesudo attempt has expired. I haven't done any extensive testing and at this stage I can't find a reproducible situation where it consistently works or fails

I think the best thing at the moment is waiting to see what RC1 holds, as you mentioned.

I had noticed that issue a few days ago but not on testing today (karmic /kde 4.4 beta 2). One point, I note last night there was an update to kdebase. Could that have fixed it perhaps?

for sure on mine the problem was not present before that kdebase upgrade last night. and is still not present. (just so there is no confusion).

i guess if you have that issue it can't hurt to apply that kdebase update

stevek, does kdebase upgrade solve this for you?

                  Hi Sithlord,

I had already applied that update yesterday, but unfortunately it made no difference.

Very curious how the issue isn't consistent and even apparently non-existent in some cases.

                  Cheers,

                  Steve

This works for me as well! I have a pure Karmic PC running KDE SC 4.4 Beta 2 and anything "kdesudo..." errors out with the same "the process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" error.

I would agree that it would seem to be some kind on conflict with Kubuntu's brown brother.

Just wanted to say that upgrading to the new 4.4 RC1 did NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

yes works here. and it did help because I had an annoying file held by root that I couldn't delete after an ossec hids install. TY

i have been able to go thou up to kde 4.4.0 that i installed yesterday , and still can run kdesudo dolphin, i just checked again before posting this.

i am not sure why some of you can't seam to use kdesudo... but others like gksu work....

@ The Recorder , there is no confilct w/ gksu and kdesudo they can both be installed at the same time.
