Re: Install of 64 bit alternate fails
I never really solved this, but here's what I learned along the way in case some else reads this thread. I was trying to install Kubuntu on an extended partition (sda9) when it kept failing. That partition had been checked for bad blocks before I tried to install. When I couldn't get Kubuntu 9.10 64 bit alternate to install, I temporarily punted an installed PCLinuxOS on sda9, and it installed fine. After the suggestion of installing, failing, and then booting a LiveCD to check if there were any logfiles, I decided to try again. Because sda9 was already used, this time I tried to install Kubuntu in sda2, a primary partition. (Same physical CD, same optical drive). It installed fine this time. It may be (wild guessing) that there's some problem installing on an extended partition, or it may be (wild guessing) that there was something going on in the repositories that is now fixed. I can't explain it.
I did some more poking around and found that when installing Kubuntu 9.10 64 bit alternate, right at the beginning when the CD boots up, you can hit F6 and toggle expert mode. If you do that, you are given some option about saving log files. I never tried it because I already got Kubuntu installed using the basic method.
So if anyone else reads this thread looking for an answer to a similar problem, I suggest first trying to install on a primary partition, and if that doesn't work, try using expert mode and try to figure out how to save the log files.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
