plasma desktop not loading after login 9.10

I installed 9.10 on my laptop (xps1710, nvidia Quadro 2500m), and installed the Nvidia drivers. Now, after I login, the screen fades out nicely to a black screen, a white mouse cursor appears, and then - nothing.

<alt F2> allows me to start applications - in terminal I tried loading the plasma desktop: does not work.

kdesudo plasma-desktop WILL load the desktop, though. And the nvidia driver seems to work (desktop effects, opengl in Blender).

    Anyone here know a solution?

Re: plasma desktop not loading after login 9.10

When I de-activate desktop effects the background pattern appears, but still no icons, desktop or taskbar.

The trouble started after installing nvidia's drivers. This problem has plagued all of my fore ayes into Linux so far. No distribution has ever worked for me as far as video driver installation is concerned - whether dual screen problems, issues with hardware acceleration, or something else. Why is this so difficult to get working? All other os's I use/have used never had any of these problems regarding graphics hardware. This is the main reason I always try to install Linux, but days of trial and error of trying to get the video drivers to work as well as other operating systems put me off each and every time.

Hopefully this issue can be resolved - I really do like Kubuntu. I am downloading openArtist now - perhaps that one will work properly.

I'd recommend trying to clean plasma configuration (and start with a fresh default desktop).
You can clear the configuration with:
        rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasm*
