How can I fix this boot issue?

    Hello,

I have laptop with Vista/Kubuntu. My attempt to upgrade to Kubuntu 9.10 failed.
So, I tried to reinstall kubuntu.

My plan was to format the linux partition from Vista and install kubuntu on that partition.

Unfortunately, that did not work. I can't boot my computer after formatting the linux partition. It gets to grub then it says "error 17"

I read online that if I boot from a windows xp cd and run fixmbr c: I will be able to boot to windows.

I would like to get a second opinion before I go ahead and do this. Would this fix my windows partition? Please advise. Any help would be appreciated.

yes you can run fixmbr from the XP cd .

boot the cd chose recovery console and log in to the windos install it will show you.
      then run fixmbr.

and get the windows back or just reinstall Kubuntu and grub agin.

rite now grub is erroring out becose it cant find it's files in the Kubuntu install (you formated it)

        sigh...

My laptop won't boot from cd or flash drive. I went in the bios set the boot order but it is not helping.

It first complains about the battery and ask me to press a key to proceed then it jumps to grub.
