My PC does not boot anymore.... (SOLVED itself !!)

Hallo,

I am running Kubuntu 9.1. I have VMWARE player installer to have windows 7 run in a virtual box. That work. Yesterday I decided to also have Mandrive running in a virtual box. Just being curious. On a certain moment, during the installment of Mandriva the PC hangs. Before that I heard a tune (probably the Mandriva Welcome tune) but the screen (in a box) was blank or better black. I could not do anything anymore. So I decided to pressed the Reset button to reboot the PC. Rebooting halted after the blue Kubuntu logo. My monitor automatically switches itself off. So now I cannot get into my PC anymore !

Anybody know what to do ?

This sounds strangely familiar. I recently had a problem where I would get no video output when trying to boot the PC. I would not even get to the Kubuntu logo. I jumped through hoops, even going so far as to replace the mother board, CPU and memory and even buying a new power supply and installing it, all to no avail. That problem has since mysteriously vanished. I have no idea what I did to cause this or what I did to "fix" it either. I do know that I did as you did and hit the re-set button when I could do nothing else to re-boot the PC, before the problem.

Does your monitor shut off when you first turn the PC on to boot it, or does it go off after you get to the Kubuntu logo?

Maybe the Kubuntu gurus can figure this one out.

Well Rick, the same mysterious thing happened to me. The problem is solved now ! And the great thing is, I did not do anythin about it ! (could it be the temp of the video card gettin too high causing it to shut it down so that after a night of cooling rest it will work again ?)

I don't believe that temperature is a factor in this mystery. I had the same thing happen with 2 different mother boards, CPUs, memory sticks, power supplies and video cards. My video cards are PCI-X and AGP. I just have no clue what caused or "fixed" the problem.

I'm thinking, though, that hitting the re-set button played some role in the mystery. Perhaps something got grunged during the process and the OS "forgot" what it was supposed to do about video output. As dibl told me the other day, mystery fixes are not cool because it tells nothing of what the cause was. At this point, I can only speculate...

NVIDIA released a LOT of bad video chips in the 6xxx, 7xxx, 8xxx and some in the 9xxx during a period of time between three years ago up until a year ago. They are now the target of a $1 Billion + lawsuit brought by Dell, HP, Toshiba, Acer and other PC OEMs whose products experienced a wide range of video faliures in exceedingly high numbers. They want to recoop their service and replacement costs because they can prove that NVIDIA knew about the problems but continued to send out the defective units for a period of over 18 months. The case hasn't gone to trial yet but you can google it to bring yourself up to date.

I don't believe my video cards are young enough to have faulty chips, especially the AGP card. I believe I got those cards, at different times, before '07. The card in this PC, WinXP Pro, is a 76xx series and the driver date is Feb 09, 2006. It's my newest card. It would have been nice to lay blame with NVIDIA, but that just cannot be. It would have explained a lot though.

I guess this mystery will just have to remain unsolved.

It might be in the affected date range.

The problem made it into the press in April, 2007. HP knew about the chip problem since Nov 2007, and NVIDIA had been keeping it secret for 18 months before that.
