Video problems on bootup - X crashing, timeout, errors - bug and workaround

There are several threads on this forum relating to problems with video on bootup. These may manifest as one or more error screens, greeter not loading, blank screen, :0.0 display somewhere other than CTRL-ALT-F7, and maybe more.
    One thread:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3108191.0

    There are several others.
A bug report has been filed on this, and a workaround has been posted:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+b...3?comments=all

    Essentially, the workaround is this:
    Code:
    sudo mv /etc/init/failsafe-x.conf /etc/init/failsafe-x.conf-disable
    Works like a charm here.

This doesn't apply for me. I don't even have /etc/init/failsafe-x.conf... nvidia 190.42 here btw. My problem is different from what you described in the bug though.

X just timeouts most of the time and no other error is given. startx works after loging in to a terminal.
