perhaps in the time since you installed jaunty the memory took a turn for the worse or the jaunty disk didn't need to use that area of your ram

i have seen some very strange things happen with bad memory blocks.

Yup It was the memory stick. I changed the stick I had, did the diskcheck from the Livecd and now have no errors.
