Finally installed 9.10 with completely fresh install

    Hi
I was having great difficulty installing 9.10.
An upgrade from 9.04 and install using my old /home partition resulted in a blank screen with a mouse pointer.
I was able to log into Kubuntu as root and using XFCE.
I did a complete reinstall and format of all partitions and it works.
Some problem in my /home partition I guess.

    having the same issues.
Fresh install (not upgrade) of kubuntu 9.10 from previous 9.04 using old /home directory. Results in blank screen with mouse cursor.
Created a new account and screen is working as normal. Did not reinstall, as it is not necessary.
It is without a doubt something (i.e. configuration file) in the /home directory which is causing the problem.
Anyone have any idea which file/s it could be?

    thanks

No idea what files it could be - but will give you a tip that I read a while back.

There are so many config files that are related to your setup that could get in the way, the best way is to not use them at all... Let KDE create new ones and you just set it back up how you want it.

I would recommend what I generally try and do.

      1. Make a full backup of the /home drive to an external disk.
      2. Install Kubuntu fully, including wiping the /home partition.
      3. Manually copy back the data files that you need to keep - but leave the config files out on the backup.
      4. Set up your new system how you want it.
      5. Enjoy your newly updated system.

*6. If you must, then copy back some config files that you had previously - but do them one or two at a time to see the impact and expect problems at some point. Best to leave them on the backup - and use the newly installed ones if you can.

That way, you have all the 'data and docs' that you need back on your /home drive and a new system with the correct KDE config files.

      Cheers.

      Bag.

yeah, my first step is to rename ~/.kde and then a complete new /home directory if the first doesn't work. Was just hoping, someone knew which file/s were playing up.
        Anyways, thanks.
