    I would love to, but how can I integrate KDE 4.3.3 into Kubuntu 9.10 before it is even installed?

    Can I do this somehow by means of the "alternate" CD as describe for Ubuntu at: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/down...ors#alternate?

    Does there exist such a CD and method for Kubuntu?

      Sorry Paul, I guess I didn't quote the other guy. Still no joy with Kubuntu desktop?

        perhaps, this question should be posted on those systems forum;
        but, you started the question on the 9.10 live cd and got problem;
        no answer yet;
        flickerring might be the modprobing process and trying another drivers after not getting the right response (return code), finally, after running out drivers ,it stayed as it was;

After a good reboot then all you need to do is open your Terminal and Type "sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop" (without the quotations marks.) I use aptitude instead of apt-get because you get a better removal if you decide to go back. That should get you KDE 4.3.2 Then if you want to upgrade to KDE 4.3.3 go to Kubuntu and add the PPA backports and upgrade again with "sudo aptitude dist-upgrade" It worked for me.
          Okay, I have now successfully done the first of above. I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and all updates done, then kubuntu 9.10 on top of it. So all the KDE 4.3.2 programs are available within Ubuntu.
          However, when I attempt to change to KDE at login time, the exact same described loading problem occurs as before, except that this time it does not loop but rather returns to the login screen. I can then select to login as gnome and then I get back to Ubuntu. I have also used kpackagekit to update the KDE software portions.

          Now I want to upgrade to KDE 4.3.3 How to do I "add the PPA backports" before I do the second sudo command above.

          The note at: http://www.kubuntu.org/news about the availability of KDE 4.3.3 gives a command: "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu karmic main" but I have no idea where to enter that command.

            If I remember correctly in Ubuntu system menu you have the same options to get to (software sources.) open that and there should be tabs, the second tab allows you to add the "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu karmic main" When you close that out it should update. Then you need to use terminal to enter the key that is on another page of the Kubuntu PPA in two parts. If not you will get an error trying to upgrade. After all of that use "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and it should upgrade your KDE to 4.3.3.

              I'm using Kubuntu 9.04 and it is running ok (because I blocked all upgrades to kubuntu 9.10); I just install gnome too and get it on terminal - for a while, is everything ok. I posted the problem on the KDE forum; I'm waiting for sugestions. Thanks for the sugestions.

                I seem to have muddled my way through the above successfully, (KDE applications now report the KDE 4.3.3 environment), but when I reboot I still get the same problem described before. So I can still not get to the KDE desktop. Clearly this hardware incompatibility problem is not fixed in KDE 4.3.3 I just hope that my bug report will be examined and fixed promptly. In the meantime, I like the idea of having both gnome and KDE interfaces/programs available (for the reasons that bobcollard described and more) and have decided to switchover my total computer usage as things stand.

                bobcollard, I wish to thank you profusely for all your help. If there is anything that I can do for you, then let me know.
