I have been using kubuntu 9.04 and try to upgrade to 9.10. Starting the computer by LiveCd, it seems ok (I have download DVD .iso and CD .iso) but when appears kde screen loading the system it falls in a kind of looping: the icons representing the loading begins to show and break, starting the process again (as a kind of looping). Few days ago, I have upgraded 9.10 by the KPackageKit and the problem remained the same; however, I select the old kernel on grub boot and this make the system run (after this, some lib upgrade broke down the system again! Unfortunaly, I can not remember exactly what file was upgraded...). So, I have rise a hypothesis about this: it would be some problem about my video hardware or with my motherboard. I would like some ideas how to solve this. Thanks. I'm using a desktop Semp Toshiba Celeron D326 2.58 Ghz, Chipset VIA P4M800 Pro, VIA VT8237, 1 Gb RAM, 2 SATA HD 40Gb, VGA onboard VIA P4M800 Pro, AOC F19 18,5 Wildscreen.

Re: I can not run 9.10 LiveCd (this is not an .iso burn problem)
Trying to either run or install the desktop 9.10 i386 .iso CD of Kubuntu I get the same kind of "looping problem as you. As with you, checksums and burns have been verified. It does not happen with the desktop 9.10 i386 .iso CD of Ubuntu. It also does not happen on another desktop machine that I have, however, this last one is not where I want to install Kubuntu at this time. So I agree that it must be some incompatible hardware, but I am surprised that anything would work with Ubuntu and not with Kubuntu since their fundamental basis is the same. I have the same chipset as you do: VIA P4M800 and VT8237.
I have no idea how to proceed from here. The only thing that I can think is to first install Ubuntu 9.10 and then add Kubuntu to it. How that will work I do not know. I am new to Ubuntu/Kubuntu only having a cursory look at Ubuntu 8.04 last January. I am coming from Linspire which I liked but is now defunct. I need to update to get updates to major applications.
Any help and/or suggestions would be highly appreciated.MoreLife for the rational: http://morelife.org
Reality based tools for more life in quantity and quality
The Self-Sovereign Individual Project: http://selfsip.org
Self-sovereignty, rational pursuit of optimal lifetime happiness,
individual responsibility, social preferencing & social contracting

Re: I can not run 9.10 LiveCd (this is not an .iso burn problem)
If you install Ubuntu first, get all the software package updates out of the way before installing Kubuntu. After a good reboot then all you need to do is open your Terminal and Type "sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop" (without the quotations marks.) I use aptitude instead of apt-get because you get a better removal if you decide to go back. That should get you KDE 4.3.2 Then if you want to upgrade to KDE 4.3.3 go to Kubuntu and add the PPA backports and upgrade again with "sudo aptitude dist-upgrade" It worked for me.Robert Collard, Springfield, IL
Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop, Intel Duo T3400 CPUs @2.16Ghz
Xubuntu 9.10 x86_64

Re: I can not run 9.10 LiveCd (this is not an .iso burn problem)
Thanks a lot for the reply. My understanding of "get all the software package updates out of the way" is that there will be automatic updates to be done right after the install and that I should let the system complete these before trying to install Kubuntu onto Ubuntu. Please respond if this is not essentially correct. The rest I think that I understand and will follow your advice to see if I can get past my problem by that procedure.MoreLife for the rational: http://morelife.org
Reality based tools for more life in quantity and quality
The Self-Sovereign Individual Project: http://selfsip.org
Self-sovereignty, rational pursuit of optimal lifetime happiness,
individual responsibility, social preferencing & social contracting

Re: I can not run 9.10 LiveCd (this is not an .iso burn problem)
Now I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, it's everything ok. Yesterday I tried to install kde from ubuntu; but, again, it does not work. I'll try to install it from terminal to see what goes on... As soon as I get some new, I'll post it here. Thanks a lot for the ideas.
ps.: I should notice: my system works fine on ubuntu 9.04, with KDE 4.2 - I think that the problem is we get an understand about what makes the difference between the two KDE lasted versions (in terms of sytem requeriments).

Paulwakfer, Sorry, I missed your message about upgrading earlier and answered another from Tawee. Yes, upgrade all of your Ubuntu first, then use Terminal to install the kubuntu-desktop.Robert Collard, Springfield, IL
Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop, Intel Duo T3400 CPUs @2.16Ghz
Xubuntu 9.10 x86_64

Re: I can not run 9.10 LiveCd (this is not an .iso burn problem)
When you say "looping on desktop" do you mean when you log in it goes to ttl or terminal instead of kubuntu? If so, then click on the select button on the bottom left before you log in and select KDE, then log in, it should stop that.Robert Collard, Springfield, IL
Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop, Intel Duo T3400 CPUs @2.16Ghz
Xubuntu 9.10 x86_64

Re: I can not run 9.10 LiveCd (this is not an .iso burn problem)
Here is a description of my "looping" problem, which I think is the same as that of saycusca, from the way he first described it.
The "looping" occurs at the point where the desktop image is first shown and several icons in a row in the center are first invisible, then fuzzy as each is checked by KDE (I think - this is similar to what happens when my Linspire system starts and it is KDE based) and finally distinct. The first time through the system gets as far as making a hard disk icon, a tools icon and a globe icon all distinct. But before it can get to the next icon (fuzzily in the background) the screen goes blank and in a short while returns with all icons once again missing. Only this time the process does not go as far before repeating this blank screen and return to the desktop image and attempting to firm up the icons. If left alone this will repeat endlessly, which is why I and saycusca call it a kind of looping.
There are two pauses in the initialization before that with text on the screen and, presumably something useful could be responded at those times, but I do not know what to respond that would help and so have not tried anything, but rather let the system continue with its automated procedures.
I think it is very bad that both Kubuntu 9.04 and Ubuntu 9.10 will work on a computer and Kubuntu 9.10 will not. Therefore, I really think that this problem needs to be reported to the Kubuntu development team and perhaps to KDE development also, but I am unsure how to go about doing that.MoreLife for the rational: http://morelife.org
Reality based tools for more life in quantity and quality
The Self-Sovereign Individual Project: http://selfsip.org
Self-sovereignty, rational pursuit of optimal lifetime happiness,
individual responsibility, social preferencing & social contracting

Re: I can not run 9.10 LiveCd (this is not an .iso burn problem)
BobCollard described exactly how the problem appears: I run Fedora and Mandriva systems with KDE and the same problem occurs; so, the problem must be about KDE new interface (KDE 4.2 works). I do not also know how to describe or to inform this bug in a more appropriate way; I do hold that the problem should be about VIA AGP Onboard. I'll try to report this to the KDE developments. (for while, it's better stay on with ubuntu 9.10 and kubuntu 9.04).
