    Adept won't install 9.10

I'm trying to upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10. I click the Version Upgrade button in Adept (8.04). It tells me it will install Karmic Koala, so I click 'Finish,' which is supposed to close Adept and launch the version upgrade tool, but it does nothing at all. It doesn't close Adept, and it doesn't launch the upgrade tool.

I know I can use a Live CD, but if something is broken in my 8.04, I'm concerned about upgrading while it's in this condition.

    Any ideas?

you must make shure your 8.04 is up to date first and runing adept-manager 2.1.3ubuntu25.2

    see hear https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ka...s/Kubuntu/8.04

    I would sugjest a
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
    first and then dist-upgrade

strange I'm shure I read someware a few weeks/month's ago that it wasent going to be posable to upgrade strate from 8.04 to 9.10.........O well so mutch for my memorey

      Thanks, Vinny.

My Adept is the version you mention. I ran the "sudo..." commands you suggested. Both found nothing to upgrade.

I guess I'll have to try the Live CD.

      Thanks again.

If I remember correctly, 8.04 is a LTS or "long term suppport" release. And again, if I remember correctly, you can upgrade a LTS release to the next LTS release or to the release immediately following the LTS release. Since 9.10 is not a LTS, you need to go from 8.04 to 8.10, then 9.04 and then 9.10.

Assuming that the above is true (not sure, I have a machine that is still in the LTS previous to the 8.04 and offers me to upgrade to the 8.04 relase or to the next immediate release, something that I kindly reject to do each time I'm asked because there is no reason to upgrade the box)

You'll probably do it faster by doing a fresh 9.10 install, if only because the 8.10 release had lots of problems with graphic cards (this was a problem with the kernel and graphic card drivers, not with KUbuntu only) Doing the upgrades from the text console would skip those problems, but if you want to use the KDE GUI to perform the upgrades, there's a relatively high risk of it failing in one of those intermediate steps.

As I've said, a fresh 9.10 install backing up your /home folder before would be probably faster than doing all those upgrades.

For some reason, I found an 8.04 to 9.04 instructions, but this one never showed up in my searches. Thanks, I'll give it a go.

I tried a fresh install of 9.10 this morning, but when I booted into it, I just got a black screen and a mouse cursor. I could do things with hotkeys, and I could run Konqueror from the Alt-F2 run line, but I had no task bar, no desktop, nothing.

Thanks again, I'll try these instructions later.

Edit: Well, now that I look at those instructions, the "Over the internet..." instruction is exactly what I did the first time out, as I described in the original post. Trouble is, it doesn't work. I have the specified version of Adept, but when I click the 'Finish' button, nothing happens.

I'll give the alternate CD a try.
