Partition editor showing blank when it shouldn't be

I get through the installation, up until the partitioning part. I take a look, and it says that my whole disk is free.

    But it's not...

I have windows 7 on one partition, a backup partition, and an unallocated space.

What could the problem be? My MBR table maybe

Ensure that you are clicking on the Advanced button (bottom right). That takes you to the page allowing for manual partitioning.

Uh, did I not say that that's what I did?
I went into the advanced/manual partitioning - I'm not THAT dense...

No, you did not say - read your own post.

If you aren't being presented with what you should, you can do what many do - prepare your HD and partitioning using a GParted LiveCD.

            Aha! Just read this:
GParted, and other partitioning utilities like fdisk, cfdisk, sfdisk, GNU Parted and others are GPT-Unaware. I completely forgot that my HDD was GPT and that's why there's "Free space" showing up. SO I just need a GPT Aware Partitioner

Re: Partition editor showing blank when it shouldn't be

Recent version(s) of GParted Live CD are GPT-aware. GRUB 2 is GPT aware, also (the new bootloader for 9.10).
In fact, in GParted Live CD, if you are setting up a new disk with a partition table:
              Device > Partition Table
default is MSDOS, so select Advanced, choose GPT.

Hmm...Well I want to keep the partitions I already have, so what can I do if nothing is showing up? Will creating a new partition table damage the data I already have?

Re: Partition editor showing blank when it shouldn't be

I've found the most elegant way to keep other OSs functional and install a new one, is just to stick in another hard drive. It's quicker, easier, and safer - besides, if you're like most of us, the extra space won't hurt.

Haha. This is true. Well it doesn't matter now because I seemed to have fixed it somehow...even though I can't boot into windows anymore. But that's okay, that's what Wine is for THanks for your help anyway guys. Now I'm gonna search around threads for stuff about my webcam. lol

(I missed the news posts in this thread somehow)

                      just an fyi:
"Hmm...Well I want to keep the partitions I already have, so what can I do if nothing is showing up? Will creating a new partition table damage the data I already have?"

Yes, creating a new partition table on an existing used disk will destroy the data you already have.
(Actually, it will not destroy the data; you will lose the ability to access the data in a normal fashion. After making the new partition table, you could use TestDisk to recover the old partition table (and then get your old data); and/or you could use PhotoRec to recover your old files on the disk. Your data is still on the disk, in 0's and 1's, bits ...unless you start using the disk and overwriting the old data in the new partition table setup.
