    Read only file system

Trying to rename the .kde file (as has been suggested as a way of resolving problem with rootfilesystem not mounting).

When I try to edit or mv the above, it says its a Read Only filesystem!

This is after the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 and you end up with a maint shell.

    Thanks.

    Re: Read only file system

Moving or renaming the .kde directory is not a method to recover from a read-only root file system. It's a method to try and recover from KDE specific problems.

In your case it's usually best to boot from a recovery CD, mount the problem file system read-only and perform a file system check. Then reboot and see if the problem goes away before going further. To start you can type mount at the prompt and paste the output. That will give us some starter information on your current state.

Normally some kind of error causes the root file system to be mounted read only.

      Re: Read only file system

Decided to pull the plug on this and just did a fresh install (after copying the data across) Normally I would have preferred to repair but as I didn't have too much to lose by a fresh install as its an experimental platform. Also I wasnt up to debugging this, so I went for the easy option!

      But next time ??
      Thanks anyway.
