Install hangs at Detect File Systems

    Hello all.

My install of kubuntu 9.10 hangs at "Detecting file system"

Here are some steps I followed:
I try to install Kubuntu 9.10 using CD install.
I get menu and select "Install Kubuntu".
The splash screen appears with slider.
Computer then drops to text (which I think might be normal) and gives me some notes:
    1.Getting Time from Network Server
    2.Scanning Disks
    3.Detecting file systems
    The install then hangs.

I have 2 SATA drives and research on forums show maybe install has SATA problems, so I put in a spare IDE drive and still get problem.

I also in BIOS disabled my SATA controller - this gave me new message in install:
"No root file system: No root file system is detected. Please correct from partitioning menu"

I'm a bit stuck as the alternate install discs don't work for me and the network install dropped me to a text login (although might be able to fix this one based on another thread). I strongly prefer a clean CD install - so fixing this bug is my best option.

    Some system detail:
32 bit install disk (i386) on AMD dual core chip with 2 SATA drives, MSI motherboard, 2GB memory.

Any thoughts on how to get past the "Detecting file systems" hang?

Thanks in advance for advice !

It would help to know which MSI Motherboard...
If it's an nVidia chip-set, try installing from the Alternate CD image rather than the standard/live disk.

      The motherboard is a KSI K8T NEO2.
Chipsets are VIA K8T800 Pro North Bridge and VT8237 South Bridge.

Regarding Alt install disk, I have other technical problems with it (I get the Install the CDROM error when the apt repository is scanned. In short, it reformats my drives, then hanges near the end - I've found no fixes for this one also other than buying a second cd-rom drive).

      Any other thoughts on fixing?

      Thanks !

After installing Karmic to my eeePC successfully, I now see all the install steps.
Now I understand computer is not "hanging" on the detect file system.
First, I've confirmed the computer is not locked up - a simple <enter> gives me a prompt and can see processes with a ps
Second, the next step is initiate graphical install which never seems to happen on my machine - this is most likely my problem.

I'll do some more googling on my side and repost question with different subject once i understand it better.

To install you could select 'Try Kubuntu...' and double click on the install icon.

            Hi.
I've now chosen the upgrade path instead of fresh CD install - which was successful for me.
My CD install is still not working, but now with upgrade done, I'm not actively working it anymore. I'd be glad to help further with information if anyone needs it.
            Thanks for advice!
