    No KWIN GUI login screen after update

    Hello,
    Please excuse me if this has already been discussed. I have looked for a similar topic, but haven't found one. I upgraded from 9.10 beta to RC without any troubles. I then, a few days later, ran an update through kpackage kit. After a reboot I do not get a lovely login screen, but a black text login. When I login and type startx I get an error message, and if I type kwin I get can't find Xserver, or something like that. I will post the exact error messages when I find a way. If you're having a similar problem or have any suggestion, please post here. I'd be very grateful,

    Try this command at the prompt to make sure those packages installed properly. Report any errors here.

    sudo dpkg --configure -a

      thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested and when I pressed enter there was no error message. Just went to the next command line.

      The error I've gotten is:

      Typed startx
      Code:
      X: /tmp/ .X11-unix has suspicious mode (not 1777) or is not a directory. a... 
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
      Typed kwin:
      Code:
      kwin: cannot connect to X server

        I found something on Ubuntu's forums but their system went down or something, can't access it now. As soon as it does, I'll try to get that link again and post it here.

            Here is one, but I don't that it will help.

            Have you tried running at the prompt:
            Code:
            sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
            .

            This will make sure everything that was updated did get updated.

              thanks for that link. The error message is the same but I think different symptoms and cause are prevalent. Mhh, this is a bit of a pickle. I'll keep searching.

                I think I'll just have to wipe my system and star again. I can't find anything on the bug. ;(
