      I'd be scared

Why not just blow away everything but /home and clean install?
we see things not as they are, but as we are.

            Re: update-notifier-kde -d

I did about a month ago and it worked fine for me. I restored 9.04 because of some annoying regressions on my setup. I'm waiting to hear reports of dual monitor success with 9.10, the latest Intel driver and kernel 2.6.31. I have tried to make it work on both a 9.10 alpha and my 9.04 system and it's a no-go when trying to extend the desktop. All I can get working is mirror mode with that kernel and driver combination.

I just did this yesterday. No problems at all. No black screen. Rebooted just fine. I'm impressed.

Did it 2 days ago and went horribly wrong. Downloaded the updates quite fast and as someone said, it took a while to install but when i restarted I had many errors shown on the screen and after kde loaded my mouse was frozen. Second reboot failed with bad blocks on my / partition then subsequently grub gave up on me as well. I have reinstalled kubuntu 7.10 and happily my /home is intact. I'll wait for the RC or release version before installing 9.10.

                  Re: update-notifier-kde -d

Well it went in the second time rather well. as it about half installed with that command for me.
with a clean install i am sure i tweaked one toamy things in 9.04 as on machine i had to install from the live cd.
I see where the folks at kde look put there on spin on oxy-air themes . Since i have 34 of my own home made kdms and 44 of my own splash screens i have quite the custom kubuntu. I am sure for most folks just upgrading was ok. Looks like my old Kubuntu had issues already. With a clean install all sound issues went away. I have my Firefox profile saved elsewhere anyways. I like the look its nice and clean. Torcs and super tux car would not install but other wise smooth sailing Ill be ready for when the final release comes out. At the end of the month.

274 new packages will be added
                    1308 packages will be upgraded

2 and 1/2 howers later it's done........reboot .........and .........all looks ok.

well that is it runs ok but what happend to GDM ....it looks aufull now like somthing from the earley 90's ...it was butifull (ya I have gnome to)??

and I'm glad I do have gnome becose the KDE network thing allthough showing my wierless network will not let me click it?? and activate it.??

hear in gnome it's conected allmost befor the desktop finishes loding.

I know i know more updates will prob fix that in the next week or 2 ...it's just anoing

on a good note though both KDE and Gnome seam faster and lighter top load avrages seam down and inishall use of RAM is down in faver of more swap.

desktop EFX seam to use less CPU time for X and plasma and all still work and all my setings survived the upgrade.

                    and thats on a

About the network, I used wicd since Knetworkmanager would not allow WPA security.
During the update wicd was removed and after the reboot I had to right click the network applet and remove all networks and reinstall the one I was on.
Only then I could get back op line.

Yes the Gnome network manager has always worked better than the KDE one but I like the very logical layout of wicd best.
For now I will use Knetworkmanager but will keep a copy of the wicd.deb on the computer so next time I'm at a place where Knetworkmanager fails I can easily replace it.
                      Thank you Teunis !

                      that worked a treet
back in KDE with net.............by the way WICD is showing in- system setings>advanced>hardware - as a choise for a backend now !

assett, did you update from 7.10 to 9.10? I'm pretty sure the update-notifier-kde -d command is designed to upgrade from 9.04 only.

I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and as I said it failed. Sadly all the upgrades since 8.04 will not install on my laptop and the only way to install any debian based distro I can install is 7.10 and then work my way up.

Ok. cannot wait until the final version is released so installed the beta today. Went smoothly and everything works well, even knetworkmanager sees my network but failed to connect because it needed a password for the kdewallet and was refusing my normal (the only one I use) password. Downloaded wicd and as usual great connection manager.
Even better the blue lights on my wireless PCMCIA card are on,... happy days.
