    Re: [resolved?] Don't Update!

When I was running Debian and ext3 I could go make coffee after a fsck started, and return to see it only 70% done. Now it probably takes less than a minute.
That's where I miss ReiserFS. I have, in emergency situations, pulled the plug on a PC without shutting it down. ReiserFS NEVER failed to recover the file system and I have NEVER lost data or applications while using ReiserFS. During reboot ReiserFS would say "Replaying Journal" and then boot within 5 seconds. To bad Hans Reiser couldn't have just walked away from his wife. Now, AFAIK, ReiserFS 3 isn't supported and 4.0 will never go gold.

    Too bad.

Yes, 3 years ago reiserfs was a very solid choice. I used it reliably. Now, everything I see says it's a dead-ender:

      On the bright side:

      - ext4 has been humming along reliably since I partitioned my new 1TB hard drive, about 6 or 8 months ago

      - Being a 64-bit user, I've been running jfs on several partitions for quite awhile, with no noticeable issues. JFS doesn't get much press, but it is a native 64-bit filesystem and is maintained by IBM.

      - I have exactly one ext3 partition left, among my 3 hard drives. When it comes up for fsck, it is the dreariest 5-minute wait that I can think of. I'm afraid it won't be ext3 much longer ....
