USB Mouse stopped working on my Toshiba Satellite laptop

I have been running Kubuntu 9.10 on my Toshiba Satellite laptop. In the past, the USB mouse I normally use with it would not sync up and it would not move the cursor on the screen. On those occasions, I could reboot and the mouse would work.

Just recently, the USB mouse will not work at all, even after a reboot. I did a search in the database and did not find any similar problems. I check the /var/log/dmesg file for USB messages and found the following USB references:

I have a dual boot system with 9.10 and Windows 7.
It is probably only coincidence, but the failure occurred after an episode on Windows 7, where
I introduced an external USB drive in the Windows environment. After a day, the USB external drive failed and when I researched the problem on the internet, I found that Microsoft has a known bug with USB support on 64 bit systems. I have to wonder if there is anything on the USB controller that can be set by the Microsoft driver that would effect the USB controller on both Windows 7 and Linux. Hmmmm?

Is there anyway to reset the Linux USB driver configuration?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Try the obvious things first, namely, plug the mouse into one of the other USB ports. If it works, then the port it was plugged into must be concidered the problem - maybe dead? If the mouse does work on another USB port, try some other USB device - a thumbdrive - in the port that is suspect. If no other device works with the suspect USB port, then you can reasonably declare it to be dead.

I did try the mouse in other ports and it worked in none of them. I'm embarrassed to say that I followed your advice and tried a different mouse and sure enough the other mouse worked. The broke one fooled me because the lights were lit up. Thanks for pointing at the obvious first.
