CD-R disc doesn't show up in Karmic

    Hello

I've got several occasions when CD-R disc, when inserted in my laptop's DVD-W drive, doesn't show up in the devices tray application. However, it shows up properly in Windows Vista on the same PC (dual boot). So, this is some kind of driver problem, I figure.

The DVD device name is TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633A (Seagate).

Well, the "bug" perhaps is that Karmic doesn't recognise the type of the disc, and that should be fixed someday. But meanwhile, perhaps there are some console commands to mount the drive with certain parameters, so that I don't do that shameful reboot to Vista?

    What does dmesg say?

When you put in a blank disc, it should look like

    [356935.193817] sr 4:0:1:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[356935.193823] sr 4:0:1:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]

      Hello,

I admit I was unclear - the problems I experience are with CD-R that already has files on it.

Here's my dmesg dump, when the unrecognised disc is inserted:

      [ 4496.213023] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Unhandled sense code

Well it's more interesting now - did you "Finalize" the disc when you made it

Did you burn it in Windoze or linux?

This disc was not made by me, and it would be either hard to identify or contact the original burner, or he would find it troublesome to answer that kind of question either because of bad memory or poor understanding of burner settings.

Since the files on it are Word DOCs, I'd bet that burning happened on Win.

However, while I have the disc on my table, I can run any kind of tests you'd ask. I have successfully burned couple of CD-RWs myself, with this same hardware, in this same Kubuntu, and I can successfully read them now, but I am afraid this doesn't help much, if only to justify that there is no problem with hardware.

That error isn't much use either - whatever is wrong with sectors 2392 and 299 isn't obvious but the Sense Key : Hardware Error [current] is a little scary.

This is happening only with one specific disk or all discs?

Try putting the disk in and launching k3b and doing "Media Info" (under Device) and see what it reports, if anything.

It's hard to assume anything for "all discs". I have stumbled upon three burned CDs with this kind of problem. And I have seen CD-RWs that read properly.

The K3b shows this media info for this faulty CD-R:

I'd do a little web searching on your drive model - sounds like a driver issue. It seems the cd-r was read ok by k3b...
