That should be mounted automatically once you inserted the CD.

I have almost the same issue. I've tried burning an ISO to dvd-r discs. With MS Vista it doesn't show anything in Windows Explorer, and with Kubuntu, I don't see an icon in Dolphin to show me what is one the disc(s) either. Also from the MS Vista side, it tells me the disk is write protected. Is there something that I need to do to a DVD-R before burning an ISO?

This is a HP Pavilion dv6835nr, dual booted Vista/Kubuntu.

It does not show up in the device notifier, it will not mount automatically and when i try to mount ie [sudo mount /dev/cdrom] the konsole just becomes unresponsive. and this computer also has windows 7 on it and windows 7 recognizes a cd almost immediately.

              Re: CD mount problems

When i have a cd mounted by rebooting with it in the outcome is :

Device was not specified. Trying to find an appropriate drive...
              Detected CD-R drive: /dev/cdrw
              Using /dev/cdrom of unknown capabilities
              Device type : Removable CD-ROM
              Version : 5
              Response Format: 2
              Capabilities :
              Vendor_info : 'TSSTcorp'
              Identification : 'CDDVDW TS-U633A '
              Revision : 'AC01'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW.
              Using generic SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver (mmc_mdvd).
              Driver flags : SWABAUDIO BURNFREE
              Supported modes: PACKET SAO

Then when i open the drive and close it again it says :

Device was not specified. Trying to find an appropriate drive...
              Detected CD-R drive: /dev/cdrw
              Using /dev/cdrom of unknown capabilities

              ... and then stops.

and [sudo mount /dev/cdrw] goes unresponsive too.

We have similar drives. Here's my output:
                Code:
Device was not specified. Trying to find an appropriate drive...
                Detected CD-R drive: /dev/cdrw
                Using /dev/cdrom of unknown capabilities

                Capabilities :
                Vendor_info : 'TSSTcorp'
                Identification : 'CDDVDW SH-S202J '
                Revision : 'SB02'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW.
                Using generic SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver (mmc_mdvd).

Try this command to see hardware location:

$ cdrecord -scanbus. It should look something like below:
                Code:
                scsibus1:
                    1,0,0 100) 'TSSTcorp' 'CDDVDW SH-S202J ' 'SB02' Removable CD-ROM
