    Screen Issue???

Hey Guys, I just installed (fresh install) K 9.10 on a Dell 500m laptop and everything seems to work great with this one exception. When I go to the "systems Settings" menu and click on "Display" my screen flickers and then goes blanks. Looks and sounds like the laptop is still running but the only way I can get out of this is to do a hard shutdown. When it reboots it is fine, just as long as I stay out of the "Display" settings. Any suggestions? Thanks,

    -Dave

      Re: Screen Issue

Totally not an expert on this, but my guess would be there is either a driver issue or a problem with Xorg.

When the Display settings are activated, I'm thinking it polls Xorg to see what is happening, or what is allowed, and then finds it doesn't like something.

Make sure the video drivers are correct, and if the driver is able to adjust the display, perhaps use those settings instead. If you are using the restricted drivers, maybe change the version to see if that clears anything up.

I still haven't figured out how the new Xorg configuration works, so I can't help with that.

On a final note, instead of rebooting, try Ctrl-Alt-F1, and a terminal should appear. Log in, and then type

      sudo killall kdm

This should kill the current kde system and restart it - hopefully with a login screen. This would be quicker than having to reboot all the way if it works.

You did a fresh install. Since then, have you updated your package cache and checked/installed any updates?

I have done all of the updates and still had the same problem. However, today I am performing another fresh install since the HDD I originally used died. The initial install is complete and I'm currently in the process of applying all of the updates. I'm hoping it will correct it'self but if not I'll be right back here. Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it.

Actually there's a much better way, which you will most likely need to know about in the future. When you encounter this situation again, press and hold Alt and SysRq, and then in sequence press R, S, E, I, U, and B.
