x won't start after upgrade to kde 4.4

I can get nvidia driver 190.x.x working with kde 4.3.x on my geforce 7600 gs card but when I upgrade to 4.4 it breaks and x won't start. I then have to use mc to edit xorg.conf to use the "nv" driver instead but then I can't get any Nvidia driver other then 173.x.x to work and when I do the system isn't particularly stable. Any idea why using the drivers provided in the repo break x?? should I compile from source? or is it an issue with Kubuntu overall.

It is not a general issue with all Nvidia cards -- my GTX260 is fine with KDE 4.4. But I have not seen another post from anyone with a 7xxx series card. If you haven't done it already, you might want to step carefully through this guide:
