    A tale of two Karmics

This Sony notebook was purchased with VISTA on it. I partitioned off a chunk and eventually put Kubuntu Jaunty (Call it A) on it. I needed Windows to run a PCL dev tool I was using to work on a new kind of tractor control system. Later, I discovered that CodeWeaver's Crossover Office 7.0 Pro running on Jaunty could also run that PCL dev tool app. So, I replaced Vista with Jaunty too (Call it B), thinking that later I would later replace them both with one Kubuntu installation.

When Karmic came out I decided to upgrade Jaunty A to Karmic A but install Karmic B on top of Jaunty B using the LiveCD. Both the upgrade and the install worked well, and as long as I needed that special Windows app, Karmic A had to stay. However, I spend all of my time in Karmic B, because it has the larger partition.

Yesterday, or the day before?, the 31-19 kernels were added by the updater. I was running the 31-17 kernel in Karmic B, which boots automatically. I manually boot the 31-19 kernel to see if it would improve the problem I have with Stellarium. It didn't. While running it I got a Skype call from a friend. To my surprise I couldn't see myself in the little video window, nor could he see my video on his screen. My webcam light was off. I booted into Karmic A with the 31-19 kernel and discovered that the web camer works fine, as does Skype.

So, to summarize, this laptop has two copies of Kubuntu Karmic, both automatically updated, both using the same video driver, both have skype, cheese and guvcview, but while running the 31-19 kernel the cheese, skype, guvcview and the webcam works in B but not in A.

The 'obvious' thing that I pick up from your description, is that you did a 'clean' install of Karmic on Jaunty B. So, you actually have two different Karmic systems - one that was 'upgraded' from Jaunty, and one that was installed fresh. That means there are differences between the two. I would generate a dependency listing of the affected programs on both systems and compare the two to see what's different (missing depends, and/or version differences). apt-rdepends is the tool you want to use to create the lists.

I've thought about doing that. It worked well analyzing libmono, BUT, rdepends generates a large listing just checking on something like a single library. Checking and comparing all the libraries/apps involved with a webcam and video in two installations is more than I want to do.

I had already decided that it will be a lot easier to continue booting the 31-17 kernel on both until I replace them in a couple months with a single Lucid Lynx install. The main reason for my post was to see 1) if anyone had experienced this dichotomy before, 2) if they did was there an easy fix. My suspicions were that if Sherlock Tux hadn't heard of it or didn't know a quick fix then I doubt anyone else would have.

OK so A is an upgrade and B is fresh

So the upgrade still works on A

I used A and B to avoid confusing folks. Looks like I confused myself!

I didn't have to tweak the Skype setup to get desktop sharing. The NEW Skype 2.1 Beta for Linux INCLUDES sharing part of or the entire desktop. I've found it to be a GREAT support tool!

BTW, I am "GreyGeek" or "Jerry L Kreps" on Skype. Add me to your contact list and give me a call sometime when you see me online with Skype! (Dittos for any other Kubuntu user out there, too!)
