    scanner installation Kubuntu 9.10

Hello, I'm trying to install a supported scanner, Agfa e20, on my system, which worked OK on the previous Kubuntu. I downloaded the Xsane packages with Synaptic and got a fault after trying to scan.
Here's the output with scanimage -L
device `snapscan:libusb:002:005' is a AGFA SNAPSCAN flatbed scanner
I think the system can find the scanner OK, but I get this message with scanimage >image.pnm
[snapscan] Cannot open firmware file /usr/share/sane/snapscan/your-firmwarefile.bin.
[snapscan] Edit the firmware file entry in snapscan.conf.
scanimage: open of device snapscan:libusb:002:006 failed: Invalid argument
I think I've got to edit snapscan.conf, however can't find it and don't know how to edit also.
I've gone to the /usr/share/sane/xsane expecting to find snapscan.conf, or a comment to remove or a need to change permissions, but I can't find anything about the Agfa e20 scanner.
Would anyone please tell me how to get this scanner working?
    thanks,
    Denis

Great, I gave it a try and got wine installed along with the zip file downloaded, but how do I open the file with Wine to unzip the file? I've never used Wine before. I copied the driver file into a temp directory and entered

      wine driverupdater_nd.exe

      The instructions read:
Open the exe file with wine. Leave the initial screen open but do not follow the installation routine further on. Instead, copy the needed file from the temp directory of wine:

I couldn't find a temp directory for wine. Here's the contents of the original temp file after running wine on the .exe file
      driverupdater_nd.exe duManager.dll dupdater.exe htmlayout.dll License.txt readme.txt
I tried following the installation through using the /temp directory for a destination, however I can't find the file he's referring to in the unzipped contents.
Would you know where the temp directory for wine is located?
      regards,
      Denis

exe's are sometimes zip files. make a copy and rename it to file.zip and extract it in archive. I mean the equivalent kde version if zip software.

you don't need wine to extract the file, rename exe to zip and right click and extract here in folder on your desktop.. then you have your driver. Now what you do with that file is up to you. ill look at this post later on. I keep popping my head in and out.

You shouldn't need to use wine. You need to get a firmware file for your scanner and then edit snapscan.conf and then it should work. See this thread on ubuntu forums. (I used to do this for a snapscan 50 a few years ago and assume the process still applies)

            Hi Cresho,
thanks for suggesting the .zip extension, but it will not unzip, the unzip command returns this:
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
I had this scanner working on the previous version of Kubuntu, is it possible to copy the needed files from the previous Kubuntu and insert them in this version?
            regards,
            Denis

                Hi Cresho,
I don't know if it's Xsane. I managed to get the scanner going last night by editing this file:
                /usr/share/sane/snapscan
I had to change line 3 from the top to read:
                /usr/share/sane/snapscan/snape20.bin
                instead of:
                /usr/share/sane/snapscan/your-firmwarefile.bin
I tried using the scanner, first time the led blinked for about 1/2 minute then it started and worked just like the previous version Kubuntu
                Thanks for helping
                cheers,
                Denis
