[Solved] Kubuntu 9.10 and Nvidia GForce GT 230M (HP dv7 3160es)

Hi all, I have bought a new notebook, HP pavilion dv7 3160es. It has a nvidia GForce GT 230M graphic card. In the hardware controller, I see it recommend me a private driver to install for the graphic card. When I active it and restart the notebook, it doesn't start properly, the graphic enviroment doesn't start well, and I don't know how to fix it, only reinstalling the OS.

Can anyone tell me something about this?

(Sorry if my english isn't quite good)

what do you mean exactly by 'doesn't start properly'.. what exactly happen? nothing is displayed.. or only the graphic effects are not displayed?

did you install driver from here:
    K->Applications->Systems->Hardware Driver

if not.. then try doing that first.

even i had problem when i installed kubuntu once.. but the problem was that the kubuntu was not installed properly.

copy paste the output of 'lspci' here.. it will be helpful to know whether driver has been recognised or not.

Hi! When I said it daesn't start properly, I mean that it begins to start, I introduce my user and password and it begins to load. In teh load stage it begins to do strange things, and it doesn't start.

I have installed the driver from K->Applications->Systems->Hardware Driver, I didn't try envy, because it seems to ave the correct driver.

      Here is the lscpi output

Possibly it is a framebuffer problem, or else a power management problem with the Nvidia driver. See #2 in the FAQs in my signature.

Try a boot option "vga=785" -- that one works for many laptops.

For power management, try boot options "noacpi", "noapic", "nolapic", etc. -- only one at a time.

Hi!! I have just solve the problem. I have installed the nvidia driver 195.30 instead of drivers 190.xx and 185.xx. And with this driver it works perfect!!

          Here is what I've done:
          sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa
          sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CEC06767
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install nvidia-195-modaliases nvidia-glx-195

and then in k --> System --> Hardware drivers, I have activated this driver.

          Thanks for the replies
