BLANK! DVD+R's showing as write protected in kubuntu and windows

ok this is probably something obvious. I have been trying to burn dvd+r's and they keep showing up as write
protected in windows xp and in kubuntu (imgburn/k3b). I am working on this computer for a friend...windows wouldnt use the dvds to make backups...figured it was because the operating system was messed up (which it most definitely was), but after i reinstall windows and put kubuntu on here it still wont burn to memorex dvd+Rs that I KNOW are blank.....k3b even tells me they are blank! imgburn said they were write protected? here is k3b's output. Will it burn any disks - DVD-RW, CD-RW, etc?

I noticed your outputs, but from terminal output:

sudo wodim -checkdrive

Can you swap out the drive to another system for checking, or swap in another one. Maybe a defective DVD burner.

I don't know what the write protected problem is, but maybe it is a defect in the discs.

Of all the optical media I have tried Memorex has always been the worst. I have come to expect failure rates of 50% and higher with Memorex branded discs. Even when they burn without errors they seem to fade within weeks or months. I have purchased both individual jewel-case discs and medium packs (25 or 30 discs) and it just doesn't matter, they are badly manufactured discs.

i cant swap the drive out unfortunately because it is in a laptop....that and i dont have anything to swap it to. It will burn cd-r's just fine. i wish i had another brand of dvd to try before i give this back to my friend.

Maybe find another friend with a DVD burner and see if he has the same results. I also had bad experience using Memorex, but they at least burned, but these ID as" RITEK/F16". Some manufactures have good and bad quality. I think CDFreaks (now MyCE)has in the past ID the ones to look out for.
