Re: 9.10 no sound on hp dv6 1201au

Okay. Time to begin troubleshooting following the links in #6 of dibl's Top 20 Kubuntu FAQs & Answers However, before beginning with that, do you have working sound when you boot from the LiveCD?

No trouble. Verify that you have the Proprietary drivers for devices (restricted) repository 'active.'

        K > System > Software Sources > Ubuntu Software

If the repository is not checked, check it, then Close and Reload.

          it was checked.
Now,from the kubuntu faq I am trying to identify my soundcard from the list, but I don't seem to find it.Maybe it's not listed?

Still looking here. Another basic question: Do you have the laptops volume control (physical control) turned up?

            Post the output of:
            Code:
            cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf | grep snd-hda
If nothing is output, then type:
            Code:
            sudo su -
            echo "options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
            Reboot.

Re: 9.10 no sound on hp dv6 1201au

              this came out!

              options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N
              options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N

by the way,I have installed the alsa 1.0.20 because
I can't find the exact one for my card.is it ok??

Re: 9.10 no sound on hp dv6 1201au

Okay. You have the line in your alsa-base.conf that seems to be necessary for HDA Intel sound cards/controllers. While not having working sound is frustrating, you can be almost 100% assured that there is a solution. Continue through the linked sound guides that dibl has in his FAQ and that I pointed you to.

You can also try booting with the kernel 'option' acpi=off

When you are at the Grub menu, press 'e' to edit and then highlight the kernel line and 'e' to edit that (I'm going from memory, but just read the instructions that are on the screen). Move to the end of the line and add acpi=off and then follow the instructions on that screen for booting. This procedure isn't permanent. If it works, it can be added so that it is permanent.

This procedure won't hurt anything, so if it doesn't work, just reboot normally.

I don't know how to access the grub menu...

                  with sudo grub
                  i get "command not found"

The Grub menu is what you (should) see when you boot. It's the menu that lists the kernel, memtest, and such.

when I boot I see some "GRUB" written for about 2 seconds, but there is no time to do anything or access it!

As soon as you see it, press Escape. That stops the countdown and 'freezes' the menu so you can work with it.

I have a HP dv6 1220eV and the solution for me was installing the backport modules

                          sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic
