Try putting the laptop to sleep, then wake it up again. This is working for me, as i have exactly the same problem on an Acer 5315 laptop. Waking it up from sleep causes the fan to turn on...This appears to be a bug with the linux kernel....hope they get it sorted soon...gonna be a lot of cooked laptops out there otherwise.... >
