intel 945gms gfx seems to be a no go

i'm having no luck finding a solution to the poor performance/unsupported resolution of my intel 945gms gfx. i really don't want to crawl back to windows, but i must have all my hardware functioning properly. this always seems to be the downfall of my attempted linux conversion. i love the os, but can't do without the sheer functionality and support that windows has.

if anyone has a solution that will solve this issue, it'd be greatly appreciated, otherwise i suppose i'll be putting up with windows a while longer, unless i can get osx to run on this thing some how.

Can you be a bit more specific on what your issues are?

Karmic 9.10 and Intel Integrated Graphics - not all, but many - is a known issue. I tried Karmic with my Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147 and was greatly disappointed. Compositing would not work. System was extremely sluggish. Just not a workable system for me. I reinstalled Jaunty 9.04. Everything works. So, if Karmic isn't working for you as you want/need, reinstall Jaunty 9.04.

Does your audio work a well in 9.04? Mine doesn't in 9.10.

Everything works well. Audo. Video. Headphones (plug in, main speakers turn off; unplug and main speakers turn on). Touchpad works. USB printer works. PCMCIA Type-II Kingston 5Gb HD works. Wireless works.

I don't think that the 945gms is going to effect audio - so what is this thread about? (Just so I can follow along )

Thanks, I might just try 9.04 then and see what i get.

And the thread is about the video not working for 945gms chipset in 9.10.

Re: intel 945gms gfx seems to be a no go

According to lspci, I have in my netbook

"Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML"

While not exactly blazingly fast, and taking into account that I'm using stock Ubuntu, I still would like to hear what are your performance benchmarks, as for me is more than enough for my netbook use.

Re: intel 945gms gfx seems to be a no go

                  Same as in my Toshiba:
Graphics: Card Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller X.Org 1.6.0 Res: 1440x900@59.9hz
                  GLX Renderer Mesa DRI Intel 945GM GEM 20090326 2009Q1 RC2 x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX Version 1.4 Mesa 7.4

This GPU is by no means 'fast' and no one would argue - not even me - that one would expect any degree of acceptable performance for gaming. But, I don't use this PC for gaming so ...

When running glxgears - yes, not the best 'benchmark' - I get:
                  paul@myotherbrain:~$ glxgears
                  get fences failed: -1
                  param: 6, val: 0
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately 1/24 the monitor refresh rate.
                  1161 frames in 5.0 seconds = 232.179 FPS
                  1121 frames in 5.0 seconds = 224.069 FPS
                  1070 frames in 5.0 seconds = 213.950 FPS
                  1012 frames in 5.0 seconds = 201.721 FPS
                  998 frames in 5.0 seconds = 199.449 FPS
                  1086 frames in 5.0 seconds = 217.120 FPS
This GPU does just fine with any of the Advanced Desktop effects that I choose to activate.

Re: intel 945gms gfx seems to be a no go

Snowhog, my numbers are along yours, I get 1256 frames in 5 secs = 251 frames/sec. I have desktop effects enabled too.

This Atom 1.6Ghz with 1GB RAM can play DivX or DVDs, watch tv from my IpTv, even plug in a DVB-T USB stick and watch TV with the CPU at about 30%.

That's why I wanted to know from this user what exactly were his/her requirements.

I'm going to take a guess and say the OP is a gamer. If true, then performance with the 945GMS GPU probably is 'poor' but expected for that GPU.

Nope, not gaming on this computer. I'm a console gamer. I meant "poor" simply because the xorg or whatever it's called apparently didn't support my card in 9.10 and I could even get the native res on my monitor.

So, I put 9.04 on the computer. The video does work now, in that I have my native res. But, it just seems more slugish to me than, say my netbook (acer aspire one) running 9.10. Plus there are a few other let downs. Cairo dock for instance sucks in 9.04, but is brilliant in 9.10, also my audio still doesn't work, not sure what's up there.

Re: intel 945gms gfx seems to be a no go

As I stated, there are known issues with the Intel GPUs (many, not all) and Kubuntu Karmic 9.10. It is what it is. As stated, I could not run Karmic on my Toshiba because of this - went back to Jaunty.

That your Acer Aspire One runs well with Karmic just means that the GPU it has is compatible with Karmic.

As to your audio issue. That can almost certainly be resolved. Open a console and type:
                          Code:
                          lspci | grep Audio
                          Copy and paste the output.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Cant post the output right now, on my way to work. I'll post it later. Is it possible or likely that 9.10 will be updated to support this chipset?

It's Intel that has to make the changes to their driver IIRC.
