[SOLVED] failed to save xorg.conf. why ?

I'm trying to set up dual monitors, using nvidia-settings. i can get the setup i want, but when i try to save the configurations i get a "failed to parse existing X config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf!".

I ran nvidia-settings as sudo and in the terminal i get this error :

VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Undefined Device "(null)" referenced by Screen "Default Screen".

Any suggestions as to how to solve this ?

Sounds like there may be a syntax problem in xorg.conf

Have you examined that section of xorg.conf?

BTW, it may be better to run nvidia-settings with kdesudo since using sudo to run GUI apps has the potential to cause problems.

First, it is bad practice to run "sudo" or root commands, including software installations, from your home directory -- if the .ICEauthority or .Xauthority hidden files are changed by root during your operation, you will be done logging in to KDE (until you figure out how to fix it).

Alt-F2 "kdesudo nvidia-settings"

Set your choices, then click "Save To X Configuration File" in the lower right, and "OK" to save the settings. It will write a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and make a backup copy of the old one.

In Konsole, rename the file:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_23dec09

Exit Konsole.

Now Alt-F2 "kdesudo nvidia-settings" etc. etc.

Someting must be buggered there. I would re-install the Nvidia driver:

at the point where it asks whether you want it to write a new xorg configuration file, the answer is "YES".

Sorry to second guess you, but should not that be mv to rename (instead of cp)?

Yap, that worked !! by renaming xorg.conf, and saving the new configuration through nvidia-settings.

geeze, i leave the shop for a few hours. come back to see if the Argos posted the xorg.conf and it all solved don't even get a chance to attempt to help more, kubuntu has the best support
