I have HP PSC 1500 all in one.

I have no idea how to set up the printer/scanner in kubuntu 9.10.

If you install HPLIP you should get it to recognize the printer automatically.
For the scanner you must install Xsane and it should run out-of-the-box.

Just let me know if any more doubts!

I have an HP PSC 1401. How I set mine up...

1. Plug in printer
2. Print from any program that prints
3. Scan with desired program, I prefer xsane, but many image programs can utilize a scanner, such as Gimp

hplip (HP Linux Imaging and Printing System) is installed by default, so most HP printers should work out of the box.

Is there a recommended KDE 4.x scanning app?

I remember back on openSUSE 10.x there use to be a kooka program. Is there a modern KDE 4 app like that?

Kooka hasn't been updated in more than 5 years and was taken out of KDEGraphics in 2007, which it was the only KDE based scanning program that I know of. They are, however, looking for developers to port it to KDE 4 and keep it updated. You can find out more at http://kooka.kde.org. If I remember correctly, there was once an HP application just for their scanners that was fairly decent, but I haven't been able to find it.

Many programs can scan though, even OpenOffice.org. Also, if the Kipi-plugins package is installed, Gwenview can be used for scanning as well. To do this in Gwenview, click Plugins > Import > Scan Images. I think that would be the closest there is to a KDE4 scanning program.

There is skanlite http://userbase.kde.org/Skanlite I haven't used it myself but I think it is very basic. I am going to try and install my scanner and may try skanlite but will probably use xsane.

I don't use Krita or Kword myself, but I think it would be a feature that should be available in at least Krita, but not sure about Kword.

I have not heard about skanlite, I'll have to give it a try sometime. From the description, it appears to be a very minimal scanning application. Maybe a little to minimal for my taste. It doesn't appear to be able to scan to PDF. If it could do that, it would be just about perfect for me.

I have had the same printer (now binned in preference to Brother) since dapper drake and it was always automatically detected and set up by kubuntu. Even the extra tools works as well as under windows.
For scanning I install xsane.

That was the best computer experience ever.
