    Not very helpful.

What manufacture/model is your external HD?

I think im having the same problem... If i plug in a portable usb drive nothing happens... but if I leave it plugged in and reboot it magically gets mounted.

I don't care to get too deep into the state-of-the-art with external USBs because I'm not any expert on any of it, but just to say that not long ago there was an issue about how they worked. If you had eSATA enabled motherboard, you could plug the external HDD in and it would come right up, be recognized instantly (assuming the drive enclosure was also eSATA capable). If you connected the external HDD using regular SATA/USB, you must have it connected and turned on and then re-boot for it to be recognized. I had a Rosewill external enclosure that way (about 3 years ago), and the fine-print specs confirmed what I'm saying here. Dig into your specs and see what you can find.

                -Inserted Kubuntu 9.10 cd
                -Installed using whole drive option

                done....

I really wish I could solve this because it is the only thing holding me back from being happy with the new karmic.

ps. I can plug it into my openSUSE 11.1 workstation and my ps3 and it works fine. Its just karmic not seeing any usb drives I plug in unless I leave them plugged in while rebooting the system. Though that method does not work for my cellphone.

it's a pity that the karmic can not perform its function, try reinstall jaunty and upgrade to karmic and "sudo apt-get upgrade" then select the options provided

Re: External Hard drive doesnt get recognized

That would be a longshot/last resort. I heard a lot of people not recommending doing the upgrade with this version of kubuntu because of all the grub and ext4 changes.

I know some people were griping about some old kernel that maybe responsible. Is there a way to ugrade the kernel so it better supports the usb drives?

K im going to type this and knock on wood at the same time....

I popped in a Mint Kde 7 live disc to see what would happen... everything worked(wifi, media, and mounting). I got really mad (frickin kub not even mounting a drive!)

I then popped in Kubuntu 9.10 disc and tried booting live.... everything worked(except for obvious codecs missing) I was puzzled.

I booted up normally with my 9.10 install.. it did a drive check before the login screen... and now everything works.

                        knocking on wood.
